What is a Drag Queen?
A drag queen can be defined in several years. They can be entertainers and performers. They can be a stand-up comic. Or they can be a pageant fixture.
But their commonality is perhaps the fact that they're men in wigs. They put on makeup and get into a dress to transform from a regular man to a gorgeous woman.
Drag queens should not be confused with transgenders or transvestites. Although transvestites can be a drag queen, being a transvestite is not necessarily being a drag queen. "Drag" is something that you do, and "transvestite" is a sexual preference, label, or identity.
The Different Types of Drag Queens
Over the years, drag queens have evolved to encompass many types. Some of the most common of these types include:
- club kid
- insult comic
- performer
- female impersonator
- illusionist
If you ask a drag queen what kind of drag she does, she would give you a very specific answer and not necessarily one of the above-stated categories. That's because first, drag queens don't want to be confined to a certain type or group; second, because each drag queen is unique.
He or She - Which Pronoun Should We Use for Drag Queens?
A drag queen portrays a woman. She acts, speaks, dresses, and moves like a woman. Therefore, it's only ethical and polite to use the pronoun "she" when referring to drag queens.
Why Do Drag Queens Do Drag?
Just as there are different types of drag or drag queens, there are also different reasons why some men do drag. If you listen to their stories, you'll understand that dressing up as a woman does not only transform you from man to woman but it also empowers you. For others, drag liberates them. They feel invincible, confident, and powerful to take on any challenge you might throw at them.
